![]() Don’t even get me started about PS4 Pro vs. Speaking of power, I find it hilarious when the same folks who decry criticism from some PC gamers that the PS4 and Xbox One are underpowered turn around and do the same to Nintendo fans. This is how the balance of power shifts more toward the consumer. For Sony and Microsoft to be on their best behavior, Nintendo has to do well and vice versa. This is why I like my console wars to be like my ideal government: stable with good checks and balances. Without exception, they all fell victim to hubris and implemented policies that were arrogant at the very least and outright consumer unfriendly at the very worse. If you think I’m kidding, just check out the history of these various console makers when they achieved top banana status which all of them did at various points. I certainly don’t want one party to dominate as a healthy debate is the cornerstone of a good democracy, the same way that healthy competition is the foundation of a good video game industry. It’s the same approach I take with politics. ![]() What I truly care about most, though, are the games, regardless of what gaming platform they grace. There are certainly systems that I have soft spot for like the Dreamcast. It’s also something I find to be sad and unfortunate, especially with the Internet’s rise serving as one big, giant megaphone for fanboy dysfunction.Īs someone who’s owned practically every gaming system since the Atari 2600, I am what you would call a console agnostic. PS3 - the history of consoles is littered with the righteous indignation of fanboys justifying their system choice by putting down its rival. From myriad gaming sites to good, old YouTube, it didn’t take long for fans of different systems to snipe at the console and each other like grumpy old men yelling at each other over their rose bushes. The reveal of the new Nintendo Switch is no exception. When one looks at the comments section about any new system, however, it is almost guaranteed that there will be a generous sprinkling of salt in that pu pu platter of diverse opinions. Whether it be Nintendo, Microsoft or Sony, the release of a new console should typically be a positive occasion for gamers - an opportunity to further expand their hobby’s reach. Let the fanboy griping commence in three, two, one.
