![]() ![]() This is a citywide problem that continues to confound the Jacksonville City Council and other officials. But those trash cans need to be emptied on a regular basis, too. If more trash cans existed, it might be impossible to consider tossing that fast food container on the street. There aren’t nearly enough trash receptacles placed in conspicuous locations. We live a disposable lifestyle where almost everything we use is destined for the garbage. Why do people litter? They might be unaware of the penalties for littering, misunderstand the waste collection services available to them, or simply do not care. Oh yes, tossing a cigarette butt is considered littering. I didn’t have to travel more than a few blocks to find enough litter to fill a 20-gallon bag.Ĭompared to the rest of the city, Downtown is fairly clean.Įach one of these instances of littering could be fined $100 in Duval County, but who would enforce it? I often wish I were deputized to write citations every time I see someone toss a bottle on the street or flick a cigarette butt. These are a few of the items I saw during a short Monday morning walk down Forsyth Street in Downtown Jacksonville. And cigarette butts - so many cigarette butts.
